He is vigilant about ranch security, loves children, and was named after the main character of a popular children’s book series. They soon got what they came for, and stuck around even after eating a whole bag of carrots! Hank, the loyal dog of Circle View also made an impression. Three friendly burros, Mama, Duster and Burrito all arrived at the chicken house eager for carrots and popcorn. While on the subject of animals, we cannot forget the burro herd. It was delightful to see the smiles on the children’s (and adults) faces as they seized eggs, freshly laid from the nest boxes. Amy accompanied all the guests who wished to outside where we fed the chickens and checked for eggs. After breakfast it was time to take all the scraps out to the Hen Hotel. I am married to a picky eater, but even he had no complaints about the breakfast. Trust me, with a breakfast as varied as this you will not go away hungry.
Amy had prepared hot Whole Wheat Blueberry Pancakes, with wheat they had grown and ground on site at the ranch, along with a host of other options. After several days of Best Western style continental breakfasts, this was a treat. The next morning we went up to the main building of the B&B for breakfast, and I was astounded. As long as you are prepared to camp, I would highly recommend it. It was quiet, beautiful, and with the exception of a few mosquitoes, (Pack bug spray!), we had a truly serene night sleeping out in an original homestead. We hand pumped water out of the ground for hand washing and had a lovely campfire.
Our first night was spent in the Hamm place, and it was delightful. We had booked two nights, one in the 1880 Hamm Place cabin, and one in the Tree House cabin. We called upon landing in the Rapid City Regional Airport to ask for directions, and it was incredibly easy to find the location, they have a large sign posted just off the road which makes it impossible to miss in the daytime, and difficult to miss at night. My husband and I had never stayed in a B&B before, so this was a new and delightful experience for us, and one I am happy to share.
Now, I must preface my review with a brief explanation. My husband and I found this Bed and Breakfast (B&B) using tripadvisor, as it was the most recommended and reviewed in the Badlands and Scenic area, we decided to stay there.
